The Louvre is the national museum of France. It is the most visited museum in the world, and a historic monument. In the main courtyard stands The Louvre Pyramid surrounded by three smaller pyramids designed by the architect I. M. Pei. The large pyramid serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum. Completed in 1989 the glass and metal pyramid has become a landmark for the city of Paris.
The pyramid and the lobby underneath it were conceived due to some problems with the Louvre's original main entrance, which could no longer handle the enormous number of people that visit the building every day. The design allows visitors to enter through the pyramid and descend into the lobby where they can then ascend up into the main galleries.
